The Xiamen port in East China's Fujian province is expected to handle 20 million containers per year by 2035, according to its newly approved overall plan by the Ministry of Transport and the Fujian Provincial Government.

In addition to being an important part of the national integrated transport system, a main container port, a port for cross-Straits exchanges, and a gate for Fujian and surrounding provinces and cities to expand opening-up, the port is also positioned as a port of departure and a main carrier of Xiamen Southeast International Shipping Center, according to the plan.

It states that Xiamen Port will include two bays and nine port areas, namely, the Xiamen and Zhangzhou bays, Dongdu, Haicang, Xiang'an, Zhaoyin, Houshi, Shima, Gulei, Dongshan and Zhaoan port areas.

The approval of the plan is of great importance to construct the international shipping center and cruise home port in Xiamen., said a spokesman for the Xiamen Port Authority.

He added that the port will unify its development goal with Xiamen and continue playing its role in promoting the city's industrial upgrading and improving its competitiveness.
