Taicang port to boost container handling capacity xinde marine news 2019-06-26 15:38

Taicang port in Jiangsu province is capable of handling two million more containers each year after the construction of the fourth phase of its container terminal, local media reported on June 24.

Since construction started in April last year, the project has seen investment worth more than 1 billion yuan ($14.55 million), according to Wang Jian, director of the container terminal project.

With a total investment of 4 billion yuan, the 1,292-meter long terminal is designed to have four 50,000-ton berths and support facilities in an area of 1.2 million square meters, with annual throughput capacity of 2 million containers.

The container yard of the terminal will be equipped with automatic tracking, enabling it to be the first container terminal in Jiangsu province with a fully automatic storage yard.

The terminal also features energy conservation and environment protection, with dust screens and green plants arranged along surrounding roads as well as wind- powered electricity generation.

As an important part of Shanghai international shipping center, Taicang port has always treated containers as its core business.

The port now houses 10 30,000 ton to 50,000 ton container berths and two 20,000 ton multi-functional berths with a designed handling capacity of 4.35 million containers.

In 2018, Taicang port handled more than five million containers, a record high -- putting the port into first place in Jiangsu and in 10th position in China.

The port is ramping up its effort to improve its handling capacity to 6 million containers by 2020.
