Tianjin port Jan-Aug coal handling volume down 14.48% on yr xinde marine news 2019-09-26 16:09

Coal shipments through China's Tianjin port declined 6.92 million tonnes, or 14.48% year on year in the first eight months to 40.88 million tonnes, data showed.

Since the port banned diesel-fueled trucks from coal transporting in 2017, its coal handling volume has declined significantly.

Looking back, Tianjin port's coal throughput exceeded 100 million tonnes in 2016, over half of which are transported to the port by trucks. But when it came to 2017, diesel-fueled truck transport was strictly curbed among Bohai-rim ports for environmental protection, leading to a straight decline in coal arrivals and thus shipments at the port.

Tianjin Shenhua captive terminal, with a handling capacity of 45 million tonnes per annum, handled 45.1 million tonnes of coal last year, accounting for 65.8% of the entire annual throughput of Tianjin port.

This year, the port authorities are stepping up efforts to strengthen coal inbound volumes by cooperating with railway operators. While coal shipments in the first eight months declined from a year ago, the situation is on track to swing in the rest of months with downstream buyers starting to restock for winter use.
