Civil unrest in Senegal raises security risk NorthStandard 2023-06-08 11:29

Political protests have led to civil unrest in the city of Dakar as supporters of the convicted opposition leader clash with police.

These recent riots have been triggered by a prison sentence handed down to opposition leader Ousmane Sonko that could rule him out of forthcoming presidential elections.

Dakar P&I has issued a note on the current situation, advising that the port of Dakar remains operational, but port activities are impacted as port staff face difficulties in reaching their place of work. Also, cargo movements on land may be disrupted.

They further recommend that crew limit going ashore and in particular avoid any area where protesters may gather.

Members with vessels calling at Senegalese ports should continue to monitor the situation.
