On January 16, Sandy Chan, Managing Director of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, delivered an inspiring speech at the Roundtable Forum on Developing High Value-added Maritime Industry in Hong Kong, focusing on the industry's path forward through the 3Ps Strategy: Policy Makers, People, and Partners.

With over 80% of global trade transported by sea, Sandy highlighted the critical role of the maritime industry, especially in challenging times like the pandemic when it sustained global supply chains. Yet, the industry faces increasing complexities, from geopolitical shifts to talent shortages.

Policy Makers:
Sandy commended recent government initiatives, such as improving ship registration services and introducing green shipping incentives. She emphasized the importance of flexible and forward-looking policies to maintain Hong Kong’s competitive edge and drive innovation in areas like sustainable shipping and digitalization.

People:
Talent remains a cornerstone for the industry. Sandy called for more local maritime professionals, highlighting the need for community education to spark interest in careers across ship management, maritime law, and digital transformation.

Partners:
From Greater Bay Area collaboration to hosting international forums like the Global Maritime Forum and Asian Shipowners Association meetings, Sandy underscored the value of partnerships in strengthening Hong Kong’s reputation as a global maritime hub.

Sandy’s message was clear: With the right policies, talent development, and collaboration, Hong Kong’s maritime sector can overcome challenges and thrive as a world-class hub.
