YANGTZE River cargo volume again set an annual record in 2018, up 7.6 per cent year on year to 2.69 billion tonnes, according to China's Ministry of Transport.
 
The river also carried 6.1 per cent more containers year on year to 17.50 million TEU, another record high, reported Xinhua.
 
Much credit went to the construction of several sections of the Yangtze River waterway, with a total investment of CNY2.84 billion (US$414.8 million). Accidents and economic losses also fell in 2018.
 
China started the Yangtze River Economic Belt initiative in early 2016, aiming to turn the region into a golden economic belt featuring more beautiful ecology, smoother transport, a more coordinated economy, a better-integrated market, and more scientific mechanisms, reported Xinhua.
