Party Secretary of Shanghai Li Qiang Greeted Crew of COSCO


A CPC delegation led by Mr. Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, paid a visit to Panama from July 17 to 19. In the company of Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela, Li inspected the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal, learned about the operation and expansion of the canal, and listened to an introduction by Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING Capt. Xu Lirong to COSCO SHIPPING’s involvement in canal construction and its business development in Panama and Central America. Accompanied by Capt. Xu, Varela and Li watched the whole process of COSCO Venice, a container vessel passing through the Miraflores Locks Through walkie-talkies, Li communicated with  Captain Qiu Ping about the vessel and greeted 22 Chinese seafarers onboard.

Varela said COSCO SHIPPING has played a key role in promoting trade and economic exchanges between China and Panama and he appreciated the cooperation of COSCO SHPIPING in Panama as well as its contributions to shipping and the local economy.
Li said the Panama Canal Authority’s service is admirable. As an important trade hub, the canal plays a positive role in driving world economic growth. COSCO SHIPPING has seized the opportunity of the expansion of the Panama Canal and integrated its development concept with the expanded canal, making outstanding achievements in the Panamanian and Latin American markets. He added that the canal is serving as a transportation junction and expanding services to surrounding areas, urging COSCO SHIPPING to grasp the opportunity and accelerate development to make positive contributions to bilateral cooperation and exchanges between China and Panama.

According to Capt. Xu, COSCO SHIPPING has maintained business contacts with the Panama Canal Authority for a long time. As a trade hub in Central America, the Caribbean and even the world, Panama is an indispensable target area and partner of COSCO SHIPPING as it strives to become a world-class integrated supply chain service provider. Revolving around the hub, COSCO SHIPPING will improve its regional network of shipping routes and partner with Panama to make greater contributions to the country’s economic and trade growth.

Chinese Ambassador to Panama Wei Qiang, Vice Minister of the International Department of the  CPC Central Committee Li Jun, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Executive Vice Mayor of Shanghai Zhou Bo, Panama’s Minister for Canal Affairs Roberto Roy, Panama’s Acting Foreign Minister, Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority Jorge L. Quijano and Panamanian Consul General in Shanghai Nicolas A. Saval Z. accompanied the visit.
