The project of world's first autonomous small-size freighter was launched at the 2017 China International Maritime Conference & Exhibition in Shanghai. According to reports, this 500-ton autonomous ship is expected to become the world’s first to put into commercial operations in 2019.
The ship is mainly used for inland navigation and island replenishment. Commercial operations are carried out in relatively closed areas. Small-size autonomous ship will be more easily approved by the competent authorities for obtaining a "licensing ".
According to sources, the autonomous ship named "Jin Douyun", which is created together by the China Classification Society, Zhu hai Municipal Government, Wuhan University of Technology and China Oceanα, can run independently. The ship is powered by electricity and capable of cruising 500 nautical miles. Compared to large ocean carrier, the small autonomous ship’s design, construction and testing tasks will be completed quickly and is expected to launch by the end of 2018. In 2019, it will be the first to achieve commercial operations globally.
