COSCO Shipping Achieves First-Ever Green Methanol Fueling in China

On July 2, COSCO Shipping took a historic step in green maritime development with the successful first green methanol fueling operation for the “COSCO Shipping Yangpu”, a large methanol dual-fuel container ship, at Yangpu International Container Terminal. This marks not only the first use of domestic green methanol produced from urban waste but also the successful demonstration of China’s "green methanol production, supply, storage, and fueling" integrated model, a significant leap forward in the global shipping industry’s transition to cleaner energy.

A Green Revolution in Shipping
This fuel, made from organic waste like kitchen scraps and animal manure, significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, with an equivalent carbon offset of planting over 19,000 trees. The project highlights the power of circular economy principles—transforming waste into valuable, eco-friendly energy while promoting sustainable development.

Leading the Charge in Green Ports
Hainan’s Free Trade Port, a hub for innovation, becomes the epicenter of this transformation. As the "COSCO Shipping Yangpu" makes its maiden voyage to Yangpu Port, it sets the stage for an accelerated green shipping corridor in China, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to decarbonization and supporting the Belt and Road Initiative.

A Global Blueprint for Sustainability
With this groundbreaking initiative, COSCO Shipping is not only advancing domestic green fuel adoption but also offering a scalable, replicable solution for the global shipping industry. This marks a pivotal moment in China's green energy leadership—from shipbuilding to fuel supply, COSCO Shipping demonstrates the full lifecycle capabilities of Chinese innovation and manufacturing.

A Milestone for COSCO Shipping's Global Network
The “COSCO Shipping Yangpu” vessel, a product of the country’s first methanol dual-fuel engine application and built by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, symbolizes the bright future of green shipping. By implementing new energy-efficient systems, the vessel ensures sustainable trade for industries while fostering growth in Hainan’s green logistics and port infrastructure.
